Don’t stop me now: everyday wisdom for everyday marketing in a post-Brexit world

From everyday conversations around the dinner table to meetings about everyday marketing, it seems that the mood has become rather depressed since the referendum result. Finding much positivity and inspiration in a post-Brexit world might feel like looking for hen’s teeth.

Maybe your sales phone is as dead as a dodo and your opportunity pipeline is disconcertingly ‘manageable’. Perhaps you had some great marketing ideas before 23rd June 2016 but now you feel like they’re frozen in economic ice like some kind of pre-historic relic.

But does it really have to be this way?

Contrary to popular rumour, it’s just Brexit, not Armageddon. Uncertainty can actually offer us valuable learning experiences in disguise. In business, as in life, our success depends on how well we adapt to change.

Bemoaning the reported perils of the post-Brexit situation is not a productive use of time or energy. It won’t help to put a freeze on all your everyday marketing activity either. Maintaining a steady, optimistic pace is the only way forward – and that decision is always in your hands.

There have always been, and will always be, unknowns. Keep going! Pioneers like Earhart remind us that we can’t let fear stand in the way of our determination to succeed. Not sure if it’s safe to go ahead with that everyday marketing activity? If Earhart had waited until she knew conditions were 100% in her favour, she would still be sitting on the runway.

Exploit the fact that your competitors might be distracted by current events to find new opportunities for your business to develop. Maybe that means more telemarketing, or a networking event. Have confidence in your products and services. After all, there are still plenty of people out there who are googling for what you have to offer.

Economic slowdown, recession, withdrawal of investment . . . these are the words the flood from every TV, radio and newsfeed. But when it comes to your sector, is your intuition telling you something different? The British Retail Consortium reported that consumer spending in the month post-Brexit actually rose at its fastest level for six months. Evidence that perhaps little has materially changed for UK households, despite all the negativity. Ask yourself how much of your reticence get that direct mail to print is based on media speculation and not actually on your own experience. Trust yourself first.

Shoulda woulda coulda. Why look back on all the hopes you had for marketing campaigns pre-Brexit and resign them to the scrap heap now? Proverbs like this one remind us that it doesn’t matter if you didn’t act before the referendum because guess what? You can still act now.
